Elephant Routes and Scenic Beauts

Day 1:

Depart from Port Elizabeth, George or Cape Town, accompanied by Peter Joseph, your specialist guide, on a scenic road transfer via Tsitsikamma Forest, Storms River Mouth, world’s highest bungy, Natures Valley and Plettenberg Bay, to the Knysna Elephant Park and meet with the Southern-most elephants in the world. Walk with them to their boma in preparation for their supper and bedtime.

Enjoy dinner at the Elephant Park Restaurant and savour the unique opportunity to sleep with the elephants in their boma, most likely the only place where you can do this.

Day 2:

Early wake up call to join the elephants for a walk during their free-time followed by breakfast at the Elephant Park Restaurant. Visit Knysna Heads, Waterfront and Simola.

Depart and drive along old elephant routes through the indigenous Knysna Forest over the ancient Prince Alfred Pass – with tea at De Vlugt – towards Avontuur (direct translation “Adventure” which it is indeed!).

Overnight at Mountain Pastures in a wild, very remote area. View Bushman rock art – including an elephant image – nearby. Your overnight accommodation will be surrounded by animals at this quaint mountain resort which is home to over 42 species of game (non predators) including gemsbok, eland and buffalo.Enjoy a stunning Karoo sunset on the evening game drive.

Day 3:

After breakfast check out and explore the Karoo as you travel though the Uniondale Poort. At Uniondale you will have the opportunity to visit two historic British Forts dating back to the Boer War and also become acquainted with a bit of local folklore – Karoo ghosts are plentiful and many “true experiences” are shared with visitors. Continue to Willowmore (where you will visit a historic pub containing many pre-democracy signs – a reminder of South Africa’s ‘colourful’ past) then on to Steytlerville, where you will see elephants depicted on some of the Coats of Arms in the Main street. On leaving the Karoo dorp you can observe the history of South Africa in flags painted on the rock face.

From Steytlerville you will travel to Noorspoort Farm for dinner and overnight. Here you will enjoy typical Karoo cuisine with the emphasis on the sought after delicacy –  Karoo Lamb or venison . You will spend some time in Doc se Hok, a media centre created by the grandson of SA rugby legend, Danie Craven, portraying the highlights of his remarkable life along with rugby memorabilia. This will be followed by a quad bike ride through terrain inhabited by kudu and other wild animals. After dinner you will also be able to experience star gazing through huge telescopes under the guidance of either Pine Pienaar of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, or George Craven.

Day 4:

After breakfast continue on your adventure past Darlington Lake to one of the more remote parts of South Africa. You will travel to your overnight accommodation via Ann’s Villa (on the old wagon route to Johannesburg), visit the smithy dating back to 1890 and still in working order. You will also be transported back in time when you visit the Old General Dealer Store and vintage hotel. Arrive at Addo Elephant Back Safaris where you will be treated to a bare-back elephant ride, viewing eland, giraffe, impala and zebra as you go. Spend the night in unique, luxury tented accommodation and enjoy being hosted in the heart ofthe Greater Addo Elephant National Park near the Olifants Kop Pass.

Day 5:
